“LIFE RELIGION AND ART ALL CONVERGE IN BALI” – ANAIS NIN
During the days around the Hindu new year the island of Bali, Indonesia, is summoned in several religious celebrations. Balinese live these 4 festivities with fervor in a celebration that can be divided into 4 different key events:
Melasti : The purification Ceremony of all evil from body and earth
Ngerupuk: The Night of Ogoh-Ogoh, in which man-made monsters are paraded through the streets to scare the ghosts and balance out the power of good and evil
Galungan: The welcoming of passed ancestors
Kuningan: The farewell of passed ancestors. During this day, the village of Munggu celebrates Mekotek, a celebration that commemorates the past victories of the King of Mengwi in his conquest of East Java.
