“IN DOING SOMETHING, DO IT WITH LOVE, OR NEVER DO IT AT ALL” – MAHATMA GANDHI
A symbol of Penang, the Trishaw, was commonly used as the means of transportation for locals to get from one place to another. Nowadays, Trishaws are a mere touristic attraction pushed by hardworking men that cycle their way through the city. With no more than 150 left in all the island, the aging of these workers and the rise of more attractive career paths, Trishaws will disappear, and so will their drivers. Jinrikisha (‘Manpower’, the word engraved in the license plate of every Trishaw) is a look into who these drivers are as a way of tributing them. This is a small selection of the over more than 30 portraits that conform the total collection.
