A year-round documentary project in which I challenged myself to take a picture every single day of 2017 as an introspection into my own vision as a photographer.

DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY

“ART WASHES AWAY FROM THE SOUL THE DUST OF EVERYDAY LIFE” – PABLO PICASSO

In late 2016, inspired by the viral story of Jamie Livingston, who created a Polaroid picture every day for 18 years, my mind started wondering. “What would it be like to really take a picture every single day?” The question crept on me every single day. The challenge of taking a camera out every single day, and finding something worth shooting didn’t seem so daunting at first. I set myself to take a picture every single day of 2017, from the first to the last day, and experience myself what this challenge really meant. It was a good excuse to force me to take my camera out every single day, and also a good way of pushing the boundaries of my photography. A documentary project of my daily life, a vision into my eye and my brain as a way of understanding what makes me tick.

I won’t lie, it wasn’t easy. Some days the results were horrid, and some others the results were pretty fascinating. In any case, I managed to go through 365 days with 365 pictures, all taken between the time I woke up, and before I went to bed. Every single day.

NOTE: Not all pictures were taken with my camera, some were taken with my phone, or even with the phone or camera of a friend. I posted every single picture on my Instagram Account and this was the result.

There is something about the look of Indians. The hypnotizing depth of their ebony-colored eyes, in which the iris and the retina melt into one, has always attracted my attention. During my travels throughout India, I wanted to grasp those expressions with the technique of extreme close-up portraits, so that all other distractions disappeared to the eye of the viewer and a direct connection, eye-to-eye, could really take place.

“LIFE RELIGION AND ART ALL CONVERGE IN BALI” – ANAIS NIN

During the days around the Hindu new year the island of Bali, Indonesia, is summoned in several religious celebrations. Balinese live these 4 festivities with fervor in a celebration that can be divided into 4 different key events:

Melasti : The purification Ceremony of all evil from body and earth

Ngerupuk: The Night of Ogoh-Ogoh, in which man-made monsters are paraded through the streets to scare the ghosts and balance out the power of good and evil

Galungan: The welcoming of passed ancestors

Kuningan: The farewell of passed ancestors. During this day, the village of Munggu celebrates Mekotek, a celebration that commemorates the past victories of the King of Mengwi in his conquest of East Java.

This photo project was taken in concordance with another Video project that you can see here

Having been a nomad for around 6 years I always had to pack and unpack all my stuff into a small bag. With time the number of things I took with me always got smaller. But no matter what, wherever I went, I was always unable to let go of 2 or 3 things. These things maybe weren't something essential that I needed, but always ended up back in my bag.

With this premise, I became curious as to what were the objects other nomads took with them. What were those 2 or 3 things that they always packed, no matter where they went? In my mind, these objects reflect on who those people are, while they become a token of good luck, work, or just entertainment at the same time.

After living and traveling in Asia for over 6 years, the encounters with Buddhism, both Theravada, and Mahayana, haven't been few. I have always, nonetheless, encountered myself with a contradiction in Buddhism, or more so, with the way people practice Buddhism. It can be inferred from the teachings of Buddha that worshipping is not how one becomes a good Buddhist. Yet seeing people bowed down, praying, and asking for things to Buddha is but the norm. Some may say that what these worshippers are doing is not asking for things but just reflecting on the image of Buddha to become like him. My answer is that this is clearly a minority of the worshippers.

In this series, I try to reflect on the worshippers of Buddha, as a way of letting the viewer understand what Buddhism really means in Asia.

After a long military ruling that kept Burma (now known as Myanmar) complete blocked from the rest of the world, the country is waking up to a new reality. With its decaf democracy has come a new era of economic development. Tourists, mainly Chinese, are starting to come by the masses, and a country that barely 4 years ago didn't even have ATM's is now preparing itself to be the next big destination in Asia. Changes are coming, and the country that now is will never be again.

Gray is a neutral color, it can either be a bright, cheerful and happy color, or it can be a dark, melancholic and sad one. Paris is gray. If you are happy, it is a blessing, a beautiful city that cheers you up, if you are sad, it can be your worst nightmare, a place that will only bring you down.

I had the opportunity to live in Paris for around 3 years, and as Ernest Hemingway says, “If you are lucky enough to have lived in Paris as a young man, then wherever you go for the rest of your life, it stays with you, for Paris is a moveable feast.”

A nostalgic, genuine, and lively city, Lisbon embodies to me the spirit of Portugal like no other. Its cobbled streets, filled with music, art and melancholy are the perfect stage for a city that has a million faces. It reminds me a lot of Paris for some reason, yet it has a certain I-dont-know-what attached to it that keeps attracting my attention.

What can there be said about a city as vast and popular as Rome? The warmth of their people and the romanticism of its historic architecture create a melange in which it is difficult to feel uncomfortable. I feel comfortable in Rome and would see myself living there at some point in my life. Who knows what the future will bring.
